My dog is in a Juiceboxxx video. May 17, 2013

World, say hello to Valerie Solanas, my dog.

This is the new Juiceboxxx video, “The Saga Never Ends,” from his upcoming mixtape.

If Valerie just does four more videos, I think she’ll have a larger YouTube presence than me.

P.S. The reason I named her “Valerie Solanas” is that, when I first rescued her from the OC pound, she used to bark at MEN. A LOT. Especially manly men. I found out later that she does this because she LOVES men, but that’s another story…

Nocando graced us with his presence last month–he recited three rhymes from his past, including this early one.

This month’s event is on Sunday, October 21. I hope to see everyone there!

a new time, a new day for A Rrose Is a Rrose… September 13, 2012

… and a new name!

Someone (not our group, that’s for sure) put some posters on some light poles downtown a couple months ago–at least FOUR of them! That’s completely illegal, and I say that anyone who does it should be punished to the fullest extent of the law, far more than a mere $312.

Yet the name in the city officials’ misspelled documents was so wonderful, I had to steal it. Serves those vandals right!

So, compelled by the spirit of Dadaism, our literature/poetry/memoir/erotica/essay/rant event is now called:

The next one is September 23. Please come.

“I Need Love” – the least romantic song of all time? August 12, 2009

Filed under: Celebrities,Hip Hop,Love,Other Stuff,Performers,Poetry,Songwriters — orangehairboy @ 11:08 am

I love old-school L.L. Cool J, but man, this has to be the opposite of a love song.  Who could possibly be wooed by these words?

But where you at?  You’re neither here or there.
I swear I can’t find you anywhere.
Damn sure you ain’t in my closet, or under my rug.
This love search is really making me bug!

I wonder if L.L. actually ever told a girl he wanted something “clean and unsoiled, yet sweaty and wet?”

Public Enemy and Anthrax April 14, 2009

My main man Dan, the sexiest of all L.A. Record contributors, got to interview Chuck D last week!  And the interview is in the print version of the magazine.

But one of his questions that didn’t make the cut was about Public Enemy and Anthrax collaborating on a version of “Bring the Noise!”  I know that for a lot of head-banging punkers, it was this tune that finally helped them cross over into fandom for their beat-driven brethren.  Run DMC and Aerosmith made the first incision, but this song pulled the gash wide open, and a bunch of bloody things like the Judgment Night soundtrack and Body Count spilled out of the wound.  Unfortunately, we then got awful, terrible sounding bands like Rage Against the Machine and Limp Bizkit combining hip-hop with rock in terrrible, terrible ways.  But when the rap-rock hybrid was first getting going, it was a match made in heaven:

Slick Rick pardoned eleven years after the fact May 29, 2008

Governor Paterson of New York announced May 23rd that Slick Rick is pardoned for shooting his cousin and another dude in 1990.  He already served five years, and has been out of jail since 1997, but I guess better late than never:

“Mr. Walters has fully served the sentence imposed upon him for his convictions, had an exemplary disciplinary record while in prison and on parole, and has been living without incident in the community for more than 10 years,” said Governor Paterson. “In that time, he has volunteered at youth outreach programs to counsel youth against violence, and has become a symbol of rehabilitation for many young people. Given these demonstrated rehabilitative efforts, I urge federal immigration officials to once again grant Mr. Walters relief from deportation, so that he is not separated from his many family members who are United States citizens, including his two teenage children.”

Though the pardon didn’t prevent Rick from serving his time, it will hopefully keep him from being sent back to England.  It’s kind of hard for me to believe that a guy who once told us to “treat her like a prostitute” is a symbol of rehabilitation, but I’m glad to hear that the only English rapper from the eighties who didn’t suck is going to be able to stay in his beloved Big Apple.

Peanut Butter Wolf April 25, 2008

Last weekend was so crazily drenched in booze, I’m still trying to sort out what happened.

At some point I stumbled into Amoeba Records, and Peanut Butter Wolf just happened to be doing an in-store performance.  He seemed to be either mixing video, or mixing music to a pre-edited video.  For the most part, I was unimpressed–though he played old Biz Markie and NWA, which was cool, I was confused at how this was supposed to be more creative than simply buying old episodes of Yo! MTV Raps on eBay or something, with an occasional new wave tune thrown in. Plus, we were annoyed because the crowds of losers watching him were blocking all the psychedelic and bubblegum records.

However, I gotta admit that this part was pretty cool:
